Literacy

Our vision for Literacy at Teach for India is for our students to be thoughtful readers who critically engage with texts from all genres, articulate writers with strong voices who express their ideas clearly, and eloquent speakers who compel others to listen.

Consciousness

I reflect and grow in awareness of self-other and the world around me

Through the content area of Literacy, students build consciousness through:

Making connections with the texts they read
Writing narratives and experiences connected to their lives.
Understanding the perspectives of the author, and other readers and comparing the same to their own.

Creativity

I learn ways to find solutions
I show originality in my work
I put my ideas into action and create

Through the content area of Literacy, students build creativity through:

Engaging with a variety of creatively written and illustrated texts
Unusual and creative prompts for writing and speaking.
Having theatre, music, and the arts integrated into their lessons.

Compassion

I take care of myself, others, and the world around me

Through the content area of Literacy, students build compassion through:

Exploring different texts about the world around them to understand it deeply.
Connecting with diverse characters in fiction and non-fiction texts to build an understanding of people and learn to empathize.
Understanding character feelings, and motives. Exploring the different perspectives of authors and of their classmates.
Through learning to listen as others speak.

Collaboration

I build a safe community of support
I mobilize others towards goals that are bigger than I can achieve alone
I include others and encourage others to do so as well
I resolve conflicts peacefully

Through the content area of Literacy, students build collaboration through:

Engaging in practices like reader’s theatre and student roles while reading.
Sharing feedback on one another’s written and spoken work
Through debate and understanding perspective that is different from their own.

Critical Thinking

I identify and define a problem
I set meaningful goals, and plan and track progress towards them
I make choices and decisions based on evidence I reflect on progress, identifying enablers and blockers

Close reading and analysis of texts that they are reading.
Exploring conflict resolution in narratives.
Self-monitoring for reading and comprehension and using context clues to infer meanings of words.

showcasing perseverance with texts that may seem challenging
trying to speak in English even when it seems difficult
Every written and spoken class that they have where they learn how to express themselves.
