Literacy

Our vision for Literacy at Teach for India is for our students to be thoughtful readers who critically engage with texts from all genres, articulate writers with strong voices who express their ideas clearly, and eloquent speakers who compel others to listen.

Click below for the academic learning outcomes your students will work towards in Literacy at stage 2. In the document, you will see different aspects of Literacy that your students will learn. You can then see how these aspects of literacy build from grades 3-4-5.

Consciousness

Through the content area of Literacy, students build consciousness through: 

  1. Making connections with the texts they read 

  2.  Writing narratives and experiences connected to their lives. 

  3. Understanding the perspectives of the author, and other readers and comparing the same to their own. 

Creativity

Through the content area of Literacy, students build creativity through: 

  1. Engaging with a variety of creatively written and illustrated texts

  2. Unusual and creative prompts for writing and speaking. 

  3. Having theatre, music, and the arts integrated into their lessons. 

Compassion

Through the content area of Literacy, students build compassion through: 

  1. Exploring different texts about the world around them to understand it deeply. 

  2. Connecting with diverse characters in fiction and non-fiction texts to build an understanding of people and learn to empathize. 

  3. Understanding character feelings, and motives. Exploring the different perspectives of authors and of their classmates. 

  4. Through learning to listen as others speak.

Collaboration

  1. Engaging in practices like reader’s theatre and student roles while reading.

  2. Sharing feedback on one another’s written and spoken work

  3. Through debate and understanding perspective that is different from their own.

Critical Thinking

  2. Exploring conflict resolution in narratives. 

  3. Self-monitoring for reading and comprehension and using context clues to infer meanings of words.

  1. Asking and answering questions as they read

  2. Displaying interest and texts and books around them. 

  3. Exploring the work of their peers as they listen and write. 

  4. Learning how to pick books that are appropriate for them.
